Arakurayama Sengen Park

Overview

Perched on the slopes of Arakurayama hill on the northern flank of Mount Fuji, Arakurayama Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, has quietly evolved from a local place of worship into one of Japan's most photographed landscapes. At its heart stands the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, a Shinto sanctuary with a history stretching back more than 1,300 years, long venerated by the surrounding community as a protector against fire and a bringer of good fortune in love and marriage. To reach the shrine's inner precincts, visitors climb 398 stone steps — a gentle pilgrimage that rewards each landing with an ever-widening view of the valley below. At the top of those steps stands the Chureito Pagoda, a five-story tower erected in 1940 as a memorial to the war dead of the region. It is this pagoda — its vermillion lacquer glowing against the mountainside — that anchors the scene that has made Arakurayama Sengen Park internationally famous. From the observation deck beside the pagoda, the eye travels across roughly 650 cherry trees in full bloom, past the pagoda's graceful silhouette, to the snow-capped summit of Mount Fuji rising on the horizon. The layered composition — blossom, tower, volcano — has appeared in travel magazines, tourism campaigns, and countless social-media feeds, and it now draws visitors from every corner of the world. Yet the park has personality beyond peak cherry season (typically early to mid-April). In early summer, fresh green envelops the stone steps and shrine buildings. Autumn turns the maples and zelkova trees amber and crimson, creating a warm counterpoint to the pagoda's red. On clear winter days, a snow-dusted Fuji floats above bare branches with a severity that feels almost monastic. Whatever the season, the climb up the stone steps remains the same quiet ritual — and the view from the top, always worth it.
