Mt. Daisetsu (Asahidake & Kurodake)
Overview
Daisetsuzan — the 'Great Snowy Mountains' — sprawls across the heart of Hokkaido as the core of Japan's largest national park, an immense volcanic plateau where the rules of scale familiar from lower Japan simply cease to apply. The Ainu people called this place Kamui Mintara, 'the playground of the gods', and standing on the crater rim of Asahidake (2,291 m), Hokkaido's highest peak, with rolling ridgelines disappearing into cloud in every direction, the name feels entirely earned. The park encompasses hot-spring villages, deep river gorges, and high alpine meadows stitched together by trails that range from gentle boardwalk strolls to demanding multi-day traverses. Asahidake is the mountain most visitors encounter first. A gondola from the spa village of Asahidake Onsen climbs to around 1,600 metres, depositing passengers near Sugatami Pond, where fumaroles hiss against a backdrop of bare volcanic scree. In July and August this austere landscape softens as dwarf pine and alpine wildflowers — Ezo no tsugezakura, chinguruma, and the delicate purple of Phlox — carpet the ground in colour. But it is autumn that places Asahidake on the national front pages: the mountain's high elevation brings Japan's earliest autumn foliage, with the slopes flushing red and amber typically from late August into early September, weeks before the forests of Honshu have even begun to turn. Kurodake (1,984 m), reached by gondola and chairlift from the hot-spring resort town of Sounkyo, offers a complementary experience. Sounkyo gorge itself — a narrow canyon lined with sheer columns of basalt in formations called Obako and Kobako — is one of Hokkaido's great scenic routes, and the transition from gorge floor to open alpine terrain above the treeline is one of the park's most dramatic reveals. From Kurodake's summit, the vast Daisetsuzan plateau extends in every direction, and the area around Kurodake Sekishitsu hut and the Akashigawa headwaters is renowned for its mid-September foliage display. Experienced hikers can link Asahidake and Kurodake by a full traverse of the high plateau, a route that passes crater lakes, lava fields, and some of the remotest wilderness in the Japanese archipelago.
Best period
Asahidake's foliage typically peaks in late August to early September — among the earliest in all of Japan. Kurodake follows in mid-to-late September. Alpine flowers are at their best in July and August. Both gondolas become very crowded during peak autumn colour; visit on weekdays and arrive early to avoid long queues.
