Eigenji Temple

Overview

Tucked into a valley along the Echi River at the western foot of the Suzuka Mountains in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture, Eigenji Temple is one of those rare places where history, landscape, and spiritual atmosphere converge into something genuinely moving. Founded in 1361 by the Omi warlord Sasaki Ujiyori, the temple was established to welcome the Chinese Zen master Jakushitsu Genko, who had studied Buddhism in Yuan-dynasty China before settling in Japan. Jakushitsu's reputation for strict, authentic Zen practice drew monks from across the country, and by the Muromachi period Eigenji had grown into one of the most prestigious Zen training grounds in eastern Japan. Today it remains the head temple of the Rinzai Eigenji school. The approach to the main hall climbs a mossy stone staircase flanked by ancient cedars and maples, their roots gripping boulders worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims. The sound of the Echi River threads through the entire compound, giving even the quietest corners a sense of living, breathing nature rather than curated stillness. Spring brings mountain cherries and rhododendrons; summer wraps the path in a dense canopy of green. Autumn, however, is when Eigenji truly reveals itself. From late October into early November — though exact timing shifts with the weather each year — the hillside maples ignite in shades of crimson, amber, and gold. The stone steps disappear beneath a tunnel of colour that photographers and travellers regularly describe as among the finest autumn foliage scenery in all of Shiga. During the autumn foliage season, the temple's normally hidden principal image is occasionally opened to the public for special viewing — a rare opportunity worth checking the official site for in advance.

Best period

Peak autumn colour typically falls between late October and early November, though it varies year to year. Arrive at opening time to catch soft morning light filtering through the maples and to avoid the midday crowds that gather during peak season.
