Yamanakako Hana no Miyako Park

Overview

Set at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level on the northeastern skirts of Mount Fuji, Yamanakako Hana no Miyako Park occupies an extraordinary position: a wide, open highland where seasonal flowers bloom in full view of Japan's most iconic peak. The park covers approximately 30 hectares in Yamanakako Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, and its entire design centres on the interplay between cultivated colour and the vast white cone that dominates the skyline. The floral calendar runs uninterrupted through the warmer months. Tulips and rapeseed brighten the fields in spring, followed by poppies and nemophila in early summer. July and August bring rolling fields of sunflowers — a striking contrast against Fuji's snow-capped summit, still visible even in midsummer at this altitude. As summer fades, cosmos and red salvia take over, painting the plateau just as Fuji begins to collect its first autumn snow. The combination of cool highland air, wide-open vistas, and a backdrop that seems almost unrealistically grand gives Hana no Miyako a character distinct from lowland flower parks. Beyond the flower fields, the park offers greenhouses, a farm experience zone, and dining options featuring local Yamanashi produce. Its location in Yamanakako Village — one of the Fuji Five Lakes — makes it easy to combine with a morning walk along the lakeshore, where mist rising off the water and the reflection of Fuji at dawn create an altogether different kind of beauty. The highland climate keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the Tokyo basin throughout summer, which is part of why this corner of Yamanashi has drawn visitors seeking both scenery and respite for generations.

Best period

Sunflowers in July–August and cosmos in September–October are the park's most celebrated seasons; both offer the rare pairing of blooms against Mount Fuji. Exact peak dates shift year to year — check the official site before visiting. The park sits at around 1,000 m, so layers are advisable even in summer.
