Himeji Castle

Overview

Himeji Castle stands at the heart of Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture, its multi-towered silhouette rising from the low hills of Himeyama and Sagiyama against the sky. The gleaming white lime plaster that sheathes every wall has earned the castle its poetic nickname — Hakuro-jo, the "White Egret Castle" — as though a great bird had just alighted on the plain. In 1993, it became one of Japan's first two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognised alongside Nara's Horyu-ji temple, and it stands today as one of the finest surviving examples of early seventeenth-century Japanese castle architecture anywhere in the world. The site's history reaches back to the mid-fourteenth century, when the warlord Akamatsu Norimura built an early fortification on Himeyama Hill. Toyotomi Hideyoshi later established his headquarters here during his consolidation of Harima Province, constructing a three-storey keep in the 1580s. The castle assumed its present magnificent form under Ikeda Terumasa, who undertook a sweeping reconstruction from 1601 — just after the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara — completing a complex of 83 buildings in roughly nine years. The great keep (daitenshu) climbs to approximately 46 metres above ground level, with five storeys visible from the outside concealing seven interior floors. Walking through, you encounter arrow loops of three distinct shapes engineered for different weapons, stone-drop apertures in the floors for repelling attackers, and a system of concealed structural pillars so cleverly fashioned that the castle has survived earthquakes, fires and the air raids of the Second World War entirely intact. The castle grounds reward visitors in every season. In late March to early April, roughly a thousand Somei-yoshino cherry trees planted in the Sannomaru Plaza bloom en masse, their pink-white blossoms contrasting with the white towers above — a combination widely considered one of Japan's supreme seasonal spectacles. Autumn brings golden ginkgo along the castle walls; winter, on clear days, frames the white towers against a deep blue sky with an almost architectural clarity. Whatever the season, the interplay of that radiant white plaster and the sky's shifting colours creates a scene that no photograph can quite prepare you for.
