Hirosaki Park

Overview

Hirosaki Park, located in Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture, is one of the most celebrated historical castle parks in the Tohoku region. At its heart stands Hirosaki Castle, whose keep was originally constructed in the early Edo period under the Tsugaru clan. The current three-storey keep, rebuilt in the late Edo period, is one of only twelve original castle keeps remaining in all of Japan and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. Surrounded by layered stone walls, moats, and traditional gates, the castle grounds transport visitors back centuries. The park is most famous for its approximately 2,600 cherry trees — predominantly Somei Yoshino — that bloom in spectacular fashion each spring, typically from late April into early May. During peak bloom, fallen petals drift across the surface of the castle moat, forming a breathtaking phenomenon known as hanaikada (flower raft), a sight that has made Hirosaki one of Japan's premier cherry blossom destinations. The contrast between delicate pink blossoms and the grey stone walls of the historic keep is considered one of the most photogenic scenes in all of Japan. Beyond spring, the park rewards visitors year-round: lush summer greenery and lotus blooms, fiery autumn foliage that frames the castle tower in rich reds and golds, and a hushed winter landscape where snow-laden pine branches and the white-capped keep create a scene of serene beauty. An ongoing large-scale stone wall restoration project has required the castle keep to be temporarily relocated on the grounds — making this a uniquely historic moment to visit and witness living heritage conservation in action.
