Hitachi Seaside Park

Overview

Spread across roughly 350 hectares along the Pacific coast of Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki, Hitachi Seaside Park is one of Japan's most spectacular national government parks. Its grounds were formerly used by the Imperial Japanese Army and later occupied by U.S. forces after World War II; following the land's return to Japan, the park was developed and opened to the public in 1991. That layered history gives the site an unusual depth beneath its pastoral beauty. The park owes its international fame above all to nemophila — tens of millions of tiny, sky-blue flowers that carpet the gently rolling Miharashi Hill each spring, typically peaking from mid-April through early May. When in full bloom, the hill merges seamlessly with the horizon, creating an effect that photographs struggle to capture fully. Autumn brings an equally dramatic transformation: kochia shrubs, which spend summer as vivid green domes, slowly turn crimson and then rust-orange by mid-October, turning the same hillside into a glowing ember field. In between, sunflowers blaze through summer and narcissus dot the landscape in late winter, ensuring that each season offers its own distinct spectacle. Beyond the flower gardens, the park is genuinely versatile. Cycling paths wind through woodland and meadow zones, a barbecue area welcomes families, and the Pleasure Garden amusement section keeps children entertained. Throughout, the sound and scent of the Pacific Ocean drift in from the east — a reminder that this is coastal Japan at its most open and unhurried. Visitor numbers consistently exceed two million per year, yet the park's generous scale means that even on busy weekends it rarely feels oppressive.
