Kinchakuda Manjushage Park

Overview

In the hills of Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture, the Koma River bends dramatically in a wide loop, enclosing a flat, low-lying meadow on three sides. The shape resembles a traditional Japanese drawstring purse — a kinchaku — and that is precisely how this place came to be named. The roughly 22 hectares of riverside land sit quietly apart from the surrounding suburbs, and it is here that one of Japan's largest natural colonies of red spider lilies (higanbana, or lycoris radiata) blazes into life every autumn. In late September, without any prior sign of foliage — the plants send up bare crimson stems before their leaves ever appear — an estimated five million flowers erupt simultaneously across the forest floor. The effect is unlike any cultivated flower garden: twisted oak and zelkova trees form a canopy overhead, their dappled shade broken by shafts of autumn light that ignite the red blooms below. The flowers' radiating, spidery petals give them an otherworldly elegance, and the sheer density of the colony means that walking among them feels immersive rather than decorative. When cosmoses bloom alongside in a separate section of the park, their soft pinks complement the deeper reds in a pairing that seems almost deliberately composed. Beyond the autumn spectacle, Kinchakuda changes gently with each season. Rapeseed flowers and cherry blossoms brighten the riverbanks in spring, while summer turns the shaded paths along the Koma River into a cool retreat for local walkers and cyclists. The site is accessible on foot from Koma Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, making it a genuine day-trip destination from central Tokyo — yet the moment visitors step into the meadow, the city feels very far away.

Best period

Red spider lilies typically peak in late September to early October, though the exact timing shifts with each year's temperatures. Check the official site or local social media for current bloom reports. Weekends draw large crowds; a weekday morning visit is strongly recommended.
