Korankei Gorge
Overview
Korankei Gorge lies along the Tomoe River in Asuke, a historic post-town in the Mikawa highlands of Aichi Prefecture. It is widely regarded as one of the finest autumn-foliage destinations in the Tokai region — and the remarkable thing about it is that its beauty was entirely man-made. According to local tradition, a Buddhist monk from Koushakuji Temple began planting maple saplings one by one along the temple approach in the early Edo period, driven by the simple desire to fill the path with colour. Over more than three centuries those seedlings matured into a forest, and today more than 4,000 maple trees line both banks of the Tomoe River in an unbroken canopy that stretches through the gorge. In autumn — typically from late October through mid-November — the mountain maples (yama-momiji) and Japanese maples (iroha-momiji) cycle through gradations of scarlet, amber, and gold. The clear water of the Tomoe River mirrors the overhead colours and carries them downstream in shimmer and shadow. A well-maintained riverside promenade makes it easy to follow the gorge at a leisurely pace, with the sound of rushing water always close at hand. After dark, an illumination event (please check the official site for current dates and details) transforms the gorge into a world of glowing silhouettes that bears little resemblance to the daytime scene. Korankei rewards visitors in every season. Spring brings an eruption of fresh green and patches of violet katakuri (dogtooth violet) blooming across the hillsides. Summer turns the canopy into a dense shade that keeps the gorge noticeably cooler than the surrounding lowlands — the sound of the river amplified by the quiet. In winter, bare branches reveal the underlying topography of the gorge, and on the rare days when snow falls, the landscape takes on an almost monochrome serenity. The old merchant town of Asuke, just at the gorge's entrance, preserves whitewashed merchant houses and earthen storehouses from the Edo-period highway era, adding a layer of human history to the natural scenery. Gohei-mochi — grilled rice-cake skewers coated in savoury miso paste — and other local mountain specialities are sold at the teahouses along the river, making a visit as much a sensory experience of flavour as of colour.
Best period
Autumn colour typically peaks from late October through mid-November. Weekend traffic and crowds build from early morning during peak season — a weekday visit, arriving before mid-morning, is strongly advised. For illumination event dates and any entry details, check the official Korankei website.
