Maruyama Park

Overview

Maruyama Park occupies a gentle hillside in Kyoto's Higashiyama ward, tucked directly east of Yasaka Shrine and embraced on three sides by Chion-in temple to the north, Kodai-ji to the south, and the forested slopes of the Higashiyama hills to the east. Established in 1886 as Kyoto's first public park, its roughly 86,600 square metres have served for more than 130 years as the breathing space of a city otherwise dense with temples and townhouses — a place where locals eat lunch on the grass and travellers pause between cultural landmarks. The park's undisputed centrepiece is a single weeping cherry tree known colloquially as the Gion no Yozakura — the "night cherry of Gion." Standing roughly 12 metres tall, this shidarezakura belongs to a line of trees that have been tended for generations by the renowned Sano Tōemon family of landscape gardeners. When it reaches full bloom — typically in late March to early April — its pale pink cascades trail to the ground like a waterfall of blossom. After dark, floodlights reflect the tree in the pond directly beneath it, creating a mirrored image that has become one of the most iconic visions of Japanese spring. On warm weekend evenings during peak bloom, thousands of visitors gather beneath the canopy for hanami, the centuries-old tradition of flower-viewing. Beyond cherry season, Maruyama Park offers a quieter grace. In summer, wooden tea-house stalls set up beneath the old trees and the pond attracts ducks and koi. Autumn brings a softer colour display as maples and zelkova along the hillside paths turn amber and red. In winter, a rare snowfall transforms the park entirely: the stone lanterns, curved bridge, and bare branches take on a spare, almost monochrome beauty. A network of walking paths climbs the eastern slope, rewarding those who ascend with views across the Kyoto basin to Mount Hiei. Far from a mere seasonal destination, this park is woven into the daily rhythm of the Gion neighbourhood.
