Meigetsuin Temple

Overview

Tucked into a quiet valley in the Yamanouchi district of Kamakura, Meigetsuin Temple is a Zen temple belonging to the Rinzai school's Kenchoji branch — better known to locals and visitors alike as the "Hydrangea Temple." Its origins trace back to the 1160s, when a memorial complex was established for Hojo Tokiyori, the powerful regent who shaped medieval Kamakura. The temple was later reorganized under the name Meigetsuin by the Uesugi clan in the Muromachi period. What greets you upon arrival is not the grandeur of a major pilgrimage site but something more intimate: a narrow stone path hemmed by bamboo groves and moss-covered embankments, tucked into one of Kamakura's signature yato — the deeply eroded valley hollows that shelter these ancient precincts from the outside world. The temple's reputation rests almost entirely on its roughly 2,500 hydrangea plants, which bloom each June along the main approach and throughout the grounds. Unlike many hydrangea gardens that celebrate variety, Meigetsuin makes its mark through restraint: the overwhelming majority of its plants are a single cultivar called hime-ajisai, a compact variety whose petals hold a distinctive soft blue-violet hue. The effect, especially on overcast mornings when the light diffuses evenly, is a seamless gradient of cool blue that feels almost unnatural in its purity. Beyond the hydrangeas, the temple's round window — known as the "Window of Enlightenment" (satori no mado) — frames the rear garden like a living scroll painting, its circular aperture deliberately evoking the Zen concept of wholeness. The garden changes with the seasons: plum blossoms in late winter, irises and peonies in early summer, and maple foliage in autumn. The rear garden opens to visitors only during designated periods, so checking ahead is worthwhile.

Best period

Peak hydrangea bloom typically falls in mid-to-late June, with the best color on overcast days. Queues form before opening (usually around 8:30 a.m.) on weekends — visiting on a weekday morning dramatically cuts wait times. Autumn foliage in mid-November is a quieter but equally rewarding time. Check the official site for the latest updates.
