Midosuji Ginkgo Avenue

Overview

Midosuji is Osaka's grandest boulevard — a four-kilometre ceremonial avenue running arrow-straight from Umeda in the north to Namba in the south, lined with the flagship stores and corporate headquarters that have defined the city's commercial identity for nearly a century. Planted in 1937 as part of an ambitious urban modernisation project under then-Mayor Hajime Seki, the ginkgo trees that shade the central median and broad sidewalks have now grown for more than eighty years. Today roughly 900 mature ginkgos form an unbroken canopy along the length of the street, their trunks widened with age and their branches interlocking overhead to create something unexpected in the heart of a major metropolis: the sensation of walking through a grove. Every autumn, typically in mid-to-late November, the ginkgos undergo their annual transformation. The leaves — still deep green into October — shift almost in unison to a luminous, saturated yellow that catches and amplifies the pale autumn light. At street level, a carpet of fallen leaves mirrors the canopy above, and the contrast between the golden trees and the glass curtain walls of the surrounding office towers gives Midosuji a quality found nowhere else: a place where the rhythms of urban commerce and seasonal nature occupy exactly the same frame. Early morning, when the low sun angles between the buildings and the foot traffic is light, is the most rewarding time to walk the full length of the avenue. After dark, the trees take on a different character under the street lamps, the yellow leaves glowing amber against the city sky. Midosuji is more than a scenic corridor — it is a condensed cross-section of Osaka's modern history. Department stores that opened in the prewar era stand beside postwar office blocks and contemporary boutiques. The Shinsaibashi and Honmachi stretches are particularly rich in architecture and retail, making the boulevard as interesting to explore at shop-window level as it is from the middle of the road. Events and pedestrian-priority schemes are held along the avenue during the autumn season; for current dates and any traffic restrictions, check official Osaka City information before visiting.

Best period

Peak colour typically falls in mid-to-late November, when the entire canopy turns a uniform, saturated gold. Early morning visits offer the best light and thinner crowds. Check Osaka City's official tourism channels before visiting for any event schedules or road closures during the season.

Access

📍 Address: Along Midosuji, Chuo-ku, Osaka

The most convenient stations are Shinsaibashi, Honmachi, and Yodoyabashi on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, all directly accessible from the boulevard. Public transport is strongly recommended during the autumn peak, when foot traffic along the avenue is heavy.
