Shosenkyo Gorge

Overview

Carved over millennia by the Ara River cutting through a plateau of granite bedrock, Shosenkyo Gorge stretches roughly four kilometres through the mountains northwest of Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture. Designated a Special Scenic Beauty Site by the Japanese government — the highest honour in the country's landscape protection system — the gorge presents a gallery of towering cliffs, naturally sculpted rock formations, and crystalline mountain streams unlike anywhere else in central Japan. The centrepiece of the gorge is Kakuenbou, a sheer granite spire rising approximately 180 metres above the valley floor. According to local legend, an ascetic monk named Kakuen once built a hermitage on its summit for austere mountain practice — a reminder that these peaks have been a place of spiritual reverence long before tourism arrived. At the gorge's upper end, Sengadaki Falls drops around 30 metres in a single cascade, its roar audible well before it comes into view along the forested trail. Shosenkyo changes its character with every season. May brings delicate new growth that filters green light down through the canopy onto the path; late October through mid-November turns the cliffs into tapestries of crimson and amber maple. A ropeway ascent to Yazaburou-dake rewards visitors with panoramic views that stretch from the Southern Alps to Mount Fuji on a clear day. The lane of souvenir shops near the gorge entrance is also worth exploring — the area has long been a centre of crystal-polishing craft, and local artisans still sell finely worked gemstone pieces rooted in centuries of tradition.

Best period

Autumn foliage typically peaks late October to mid-November; spring greenery is equally beautiful in May. Weekends during autumn are extremely crowded — an early-morning or weekday visit is strongly recommended. Check the official tourism site for current leaf-colour conditions before heading out.
