Tambara Lavender Park

Overview

Perched at over 1,300 metres above sea level on the Tambara Plateau in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, Tambara Lavender Park offers something rare in the Kanto region: a sweeping field of lavender that rivals, in atmosphere if not in scale, the famous purple landscapes of Hokkaido's Furano. For the millions of people living in and around Tokyo, it represents one of the few places within day-trip distance where the full sensory experience of lavender — the colour, the scent, the cool highland breeze — can be enjoyed at the height of summer. The Tambara Plateau itself is a naturally gifted highland environment, fringed by ancient beech forests and mountain wetlands. When the lowland cities swelter under peak summer heat, the plateau maintains refreshingly cool temperatures that both visitors and the lavender plants themselves seem to appreciate. The fields are laid out across a gently sloping hillside, and on clear days the panorama extends toward the peaks of the Oze and Hotaka mountain ranges — a backdrop that elevates even a simple stroll through the purple rows into something memorable. Beyond lavender, the park's season typically coincides with the bloom of Nikko day lilies and other alpine wildflowers, adding contrasts of yellow and white among the violet. A ski resort in winter and a foliage destination in autumn, Tambara transforms completely with each season, but midsummer — when the lavender is in full wave — remains its most photographed and most fragrant chapter.

Best period

Peak bloom is generally mid-July to early August — two to three weeks later than lowland lavender due to the high elevation. Mornings offer cooler air and smaller crowds. Check the official site for real-time flowering conditions before your visit.
